The Saturday Series: the Ethics of the Olympics (IN PERSON)
Saturday, February 1910:30—11:30 AMLiving RoomBeebe Library345 Main Street, Wakefield, MA, 01880
February's topic is the Olympics. This month we'll have the second Olympic games in less than a year (thanks, Covid). While it' s fun to gather around the TV and cheer on athletes from your home country, the Olympic games are fraught with ethical issues... doping, corruption, environmental destruction, and displacement of local people just to name a few.
This month, join Erin to talk about:
- Some of the ethical issues surrounding the Olympics.
- If it's time for the format of the games to change, and what that change might look like.
- The pros and cons of the Olympics for the host city and athletes.
Here are the articles we'll read this month:
- The Olympics is a disaster for people who live in host cities, Washington Post 7/29/21
- A Consensus for the Olympic Movement to Go On, but Not Like This, New York Time 7/5/2021
- 3 Reasons Why Hosting the Olympics Is a Loser's Game, The Atlantic 7/23/2021
ABOUT THE SATURDAY SERIES
The Saturday Series is a long form articles discussion group. It's like a book club without the big commitment. No pressure! Each month we read a few longer articles about a pre-selected topic, and then get together to talk about what we’ve read. We will connect and share our thoughts about articles from magazines and newspapers that are available in the library, and online using your library card. And of course, you’re always welcome to do extra research on a topic.
